NDI "LEADERS OF TOMORROW"
MAGHREB WOMEN'S PROGRAM (MEPI)
May 12, 2009
MEPI is funding a new program with the National Democratic Institute, called "Leaders of Tomorrow," which is focused on developing young women civic activists in the Maghreb region. We are particularly interested in participants from Tunisia and Libya but also would like to include young women from Algeria, Egypt and Morocco.
It is a year-long selective program designed for young women in North Africa with the interest and drive to become leaders in their communities. The program will include a series of gatherings in Morocco, during which participants will have the opportunity to meet other members of the program, share experiences and learn from accomplished women leaders from across the globe
Participants will take part in all of the activities listed below:
• June 2009: Program Launch and Weeklong Training Workshop in Rabat, Morocco
• Autumn 2009: Follow-up Weeklong Training Workshop in Marrakech, Morocco
• Winter 2010: Conference on Women’s Activism in North Africa, Details forthcoming
• Ongoing: Community Project Implementation, Online Forums, Mentoring
Key topics to be covered by these gatherings will include, but not be limited to: organizational leadership and management, civic engagement, advocacy and awareness and public communication. Applicants should have an idea of a community project they would like to develop in partnership with a local organization; those selected as participants will be expected to implement this project during the course of the program with technical support and guidance from NDI, and international experts and regional mentors assigned to each participant. NDI will cover all major expenses, including airfare, room and board, workshop materials and supplies, as well as provide ongoing guidance, technical support and advice and resources.
To be eligible to apply for this program, participants must be:
▪ A woman between the ages of 25 and 30
▪ Already working within a community-based organization or able to demonstrate commitment from an organization to assist with implementing your idea for a community project
▪ Proficient in Arabic and/or English
▪ Someone with demonstrated interest in and commitment to becoming a civic leader and having greater involvement in community and civic life
