Workshop on  « MARC, »  Format (Machine Readable Cataloguing)

On Tuesday, April 21 from 9h30 to 16h00, IRC Rabat programmed Ms. Heather Moulaison, an American Fulbright scholar, and current professor of Library Science, who is now based in Rabat for few months at the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco; La Bibliotheque Nationale du Royaume du Maroc (BNRM).  

PAS Rabat took advantage of her presence in Morocco to do a series of programs and invited Ms. Moulaison to conduct a workshop to an audience of 20 specialized Librarians - Documentarians - from Public and University Libraries. The topic was on "MARC" Format  (Machine Readable Cataloguing - more on the subject under http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/)
 
The workshop aimed to raise awareness and establish the role of the MARC format in the world of librarianship Taking as an exemple, the MARC 21 bibliographic and machine-readable, while knowing that other types of references and other MARC fromats exist, the audience with the lecturer's expetise will investigate the basic principles Concrete ecemples of the slip before the OCLC and visualization of data in online catalogs will also be presented at the workshop.

In an excellent French, Ms. Moulaison began with a brief introduction on the latest news about E-Library in the U.S., and aided by handouts distributed at the beginning of the training, Ms. Moulaison presented the general MARC format and talked about some format specific, citing several examples.   

At the end of the lecture, she kindly distributed her abstract on "Web 2.0 in Academic Libraries," to the audience to illustrate how some libraries in the U.S. are using interactive elements on the Web.  

REMARKS: Ms. Moulaison's fluency in French made her very comfortable in discussing and answering questions about the MARC process and Information Sciences advances in the U.S., while also helping Ms. Moulaison to conduct an excellent Q&A sessions.   

RESUTLS: At the end of the workshop, the participants learned the history of the MARC format and its place in the international community of information professionals;  became able to explain the basic techniques, such as the role of metada in a library;  speaking and presenting advantages an disadvantages of MARC Format from the perspective of the librarian and the user; List some exemples of the MARC format in force in the world, the world's Francophone an Anglophone, and Morocco; speak clearly in different parts of the bibliographic record in MARC 21 encoded.
