"Beyond Google"
A presentation by IRO Henry Mendelsohn at the American Corner in Oujda
On Monday, March 18, Henry Mendelsohn, the Information Resource Officer (IRO) presented a lecture entitled "Beyond Google," to students, teachers and other members of the American Corner in Oujda. IRO Mendelsohn also serves as the Regional Consultant for the U.S. Embassy, Information Resource Centers and American Corner Libraries in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Syria and Israel.
Mr. Mendelsohn explained that although Google is one of the most popular search engines in the world, providing easy access to internet users of all ages, internet searchers must often go beyond google to achieve the best results. He demonstrated to the audience how the Google search engine works, what searchers and computer enthusiasts should do to get more acquainted with this tool, and how to stay up-to-date on new web sites for obtaining the right information from the right sources.
IRO Mendelsohn also used the opportunity to do a JSTOR orientation session to the staff, to University librarians and students members of AC Oujda . After a brief introduction on the JSTOR online database and how to maneuver it, IRO demonstrated that JSTOR is a powerful research database that provides access to full-text journal articles. He concluded his presentations by encouraging and inviting the attendees to take advantage of the AC's space and its free services. The audience very much appreciated his presentation, as many of the students approached him with questions, and a Moroccan journalist who attended the event took the time to upload IRO Mendelsohn's presentation on YouTube, which can be seen at the following link:
